Marisa Smith, President & Founder
Since her early days of playing office in her parents’ basement, Marisa has been obsessed with creating processes and automating repetitive tasks. She first developed an interest in web design and workflow automation after she earned her Master of Higher Education Administration degree at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. While working as an advisor of undergraduate engineering students, she was frustrated by the lack of good electronic tools for managing student records, and decided to solve the problem herself.
Marisa worked at the University of Michigan for several years, helping administrative offices solve their paper problems by designing web-based electronic solutions, and decided to strike out on her own in 2002 so she could help even more people.
Since then, The Whole Brain Group has grown to 12 team members and has established an office in downtown Ann Arbor’s historic Kerrytown district. Marisa’s real passion is helping growing businesses develop and execute digital marketing strategies that transform company visions into sales results
Marisa is the Social Media Co-Chair of the Communications Council and a member of the Executive Advisory Board for Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), a national nonpartisan public policy organization that advocates for and on behalf of women and minorities in business. She also serves on the Boards of The Small Giants Community and the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber.
Chris Beecher, Director of Technology & Operations
As Director of Technology and Operations, Chris coordinates and oversees The Whole Brain development team. He’s responsible for making sure our client projects stay on the cutting edge while simultaneously keeping our internal processes humming smoothly! Chris joined The Whole Brain Group from the University of Michigan, where he worked for fifteen years as an IT professional in the Department of Research Development and Administration (DRDA). Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Michigan State University.
Jamie Latendresse, Creative Director
Jamie is a graphic designer with 14 years of experience and is responsible for ensuring that the design team creates usable and attractive interfaces for mobile, web, and application design projects. In addition to being our main website designer, Jamie also leads our branding and print projects, and many of our mobile application design projects. Before joining The Whole Brain Group, Jamie served as Creative Arts Director for CPOP Gallery in Detroit and the Detroit Electronic Music Festival from 2000-2003. Since that time he has worked for clients including General Motors, HUMMER, Hour Media, Paxahau Promotions and Children’s Hospital of Detroit. Previously, Jamie was co-owner of the Hamtramck art gallery, Primary Space, and was a member of the Hamtramck Downtown Development Authority. Jamie lives and works in San Francisco.
Bonnie Valentine, Director of Sales & Marketing
Bonnie has held a variety of management positions in both high-tech and higher education environments, ranging from technical support to business and finance. Her left- and right-brain approach to developing sustainable solutions stems from a balanced education in art, business, and project management. Bonnie has applied her creativity and eye for detail by fulfilling lead roles at The Whole Brain Group as Consultant, Project Manager and Business Development Lead. From eCommerce Websites to Software and iPhone app development, Bonnie has acquired a broad repertoire of consulting and management expertise. And in everything she does, Bonnie manages to keep things organized while also making sure everyone is having fun!
Dale Bond, Web Developer & QA Guru
Dale turns our designers’ visions into reality with WordPress coding magic, and his attention to detail makes him ideal for performing our Quality Assurance reviews before our projects go out the door! Before beginning his programming career 13 years ago at United HealthCare, he developed technical documentation and forms for the insurance industry. A true renaissance man, Dale holds a bachelor’s degree in German from Baldwin-Wallace College, and has master’s degrees in religion and medical ethics from Yale University.
Megan Cough, Digital Marketing Specialist
Megan holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature and history from Central Michigan University, and is working toward her MBA, specializing in marketing from Eastern Michigan University. Megan became interested in branding while juggling college and working for Target, which led to her passion for using social media to brand individuals and businesses. While working in the Events Marketing Department for Borders Group, Inc., she introduced the department to a crazy new website called Twitter, and pushed the company into the world of social media for the first time. Since then, she moved from the brand side to the agency world, where she worked on social media and PPC for clients such as MEDC Travel (Pure Michigan), Blio, National Association of REALTORS®, hiredMYway, and the Detroit Metro CVB. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling with friends, taking community classes, and researching the next best thing in social media – for fun! Megan uses this knowledge at The Whole Brain Group as a specialist in Social Media, while she works with clients to create and deliver digital marketing strategies that will positively impact their business.
Emily Penix, Integrated Marketing Strategist
Emily received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Michigan State University in 2003 and shortly thereafter began working in the web marketing field. Coupled with her web experience she has also worked in art direction and design for O’Neill, Rip Curl, and Callaway Golf. She is a Web Marketing Director for ChelseaMich.com and a project manager and client advocate at The Whole Brain Group for website, online marketing, and branding projects. Anyone who has worked with Emily can attest to her amazing ability to keep clients happy while delivering quality work!
Angelina Vergari, Online Campaign Analyst
Angelina specializes in Search-Engine Marketing strategy, specifically Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising. Through Pay-Per-Click account management & optimization, Angelina increases web visibility for businesses, while increasing their web traffic, and maximizing their ROI. Angelina has successfully developed and optimized PPC campaigns for a wide variety of local and national clientele, which has led to increased conversion rates, fresh leads, and increased sales for their businesses. Angelina has also worked for Eastern Michigan University, developing Google AdWords accounts for students and non-profit organizations participating in Eastern Michigan University’s hands-on search marketing courses. Angelina attends Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Computer Information Systems with a concentration in Search Marketing. She is a self admitted search marketing geek, and enjoys staying current with developing technology.
Carole Baker, Financial Coordinator
Carole uses her 20 years of business and financial management experience to keep the financial side of The Whole Brain Group running smoothly. Although she began her career as a translator for a small French wholesale company in the Boston area, she found herself attracted to the mechanics of small business. After working a number of years in operations management, Carole moved from Boston back home to Ann Arbor to join the Zingerman’s management team as their finance manager. She received her MBA from the University of Michgan and has been working with The Whole Brain Group since 2005.
